Chapter Ten

Brett interjected, “Demon summoning and human sacrifice.”

I nodded, “We hoped it was just that duo that wound up killing themselves. Last night I was attacked by a demon while on riot patrol. That tells us more mages know those spell glyphs and are willing to use them. I don’t believe it was a targeted attempt specifically aimed at me. The mage responsible didn’t participate nor did they send an elemental to assist.

“Worst case, the demon was sent out to retrieve a random mage for sacrifice. I think that’s the danger we should focus on, since preparations against that scenario should work for all the other possibilities. It’s probably only a matter of time before those glyphs and their concepts are spread far and wide enough that we’ll never be able to suppress it.”

Violet interjected, “I think anyone that uses those spells should be charged with first degree murder.”

Brett nodded, “I can agree with that.”

“Me too, as it quite literally fits the definition. It won’t be easy to catch those people. Everyone here should be prepared for a random encounter. My worry is the other thirteen hundred or so mages in the San Antonio area. Our website details the use of enchantments to keep protections up around the clock, even in our sleep, but I fear many won’t take it seriously. Given the result of the drone attacks, we can say forty percent of the mage leadership across the country didn’t, so how much less would others?

“It will be exceedingly difficult to catch them in the act. Any ideas on that?”

Brett frowned, “Any mage casting it in range of another mage will be felt, but so far they’ve been exceedingly cautious to avoid that happening. A lot of mages hid their new power afraid they’d be accosted by the government, so it’s likely part common sense and part cemented habit. Still, we should educate the mages in our area to report it if they feel someone use that spell.”

I nodded, “There’s no mistaking it for something else. Demonic aura and scent are almost palpable. So much so even the magicless would sense a demon nearby.”

Brett said, “It’s worth doing, but I doubt it will work unless we get really lucky. Our best bet is to convince our mage community to protect themselves, and to use a ward to notify our law enforcement group if they’re attacked by magic or a demon. Consider it an instant 911 call. We can respond fast, and one of us can send an elemental to trace the magical connection back to the mage responsible for the summoning.”

Violet nodded, “That would also not so incidentally cut down on other mage crimes within the community. At least ones done against another mage.”

I sighed, then nodded, “That would entail making the existence of those spell glyphs common knowledge, but it’s what we have to do. It’s too late to put the cat back in the bag, but better to be prepared for it and have a way to deal with it.
